1492; Conquest of Paradise(1992)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Columbus discovers the New World, but can't seem to find the world he wanted.

Biased, pithy comments: Costumes---fantastic. Cinematography---knee-shaking, and I suppose I'm rating this movie too low considering that. But man, that story needs some work. Every phrase in the script is something deep and quotable, but it means the rest of the movie is sorely lacking in dialogue, making the characters strange, obscure, and oddly unengaging. For Age of Exploration buffs, this is a real humdinger, with no expense spared on details like the Queen's fantastic dress, the power and glory of Catholicism at its height, and the bleak squalor of the New World before the colonies, but oh, if only the characters and plot were more interesting! What a movie this might have been!

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Gerard Depardieu, Armand Assante, Sigorney Weaver
Directed by: Ridley Scott
