39 Steps, The(1935)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Innocent bystander at a music hall shooting ends up on the wrong side of the law.

Biased, pithy comments: I openly admit this movie is good, better than many other modern movies that have received this rating. However, in comparison to Hitchcock's greater works, this is clearly one of the ones where he was working on his skills. There are some really great moments (the gal and guy trying to climb over a fence in handcuffs is my favorite), but on the whole a little uneven and the ending quite pat.

Other Notes: Start with ``Foreign Correspondent'' or ``North by Northwest'' before you try this one on for size. Part of my bias against this film is my penchant for World War II films when I decide to go black-and-white, and this is clearly a pre-war film.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Robert Donat, Madeline Carroll.
Directed by: Alfred Hitchcock
