American Pie(1999)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Four teenage male virgins try to not become virgins by the end of Prom Night. Wacky antics ensue.

Biased, pithy comments: For a frothy light teen sex comedy (of which there have been many) this is an amusing one. There are a few. . .inspired is the wrong word, but. . .imaginative sequences in the film that evoke a chuckle. However, the ensemble cast is haphazard and won't, as a whole, be seen for years to come (like ``Fast Times at Ridgemont High'' or ``Animal House''), and as such some of the clanky dialogue and scattershot plot isn't delivered with the kind of verve you need to make this a classic. Instead, it's funny once through, and carries a slightly more mature message about sex and love than one would expect from a film with purile gags like, say, pie fucking and laxatives. Sniggering 14-year-old males will laugh at the purile gags, while adults will merely raise an eyebrow and try to fuzzily remember their high school love interests and perhaps connect with the simple but developed characters coming (literally) of age.

Other Notes: OK, so if you don't think South Park is funny, you probably won't think this is funny, either, but, like South Park, despite being dominated by bathroom and semen humor, it's written by adults (or adult man-children) and hits a few true notes. Your mileage will definitely vary.

How many times I have seen it: x1
