Awful Truth, The(1937)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: Grant, in nearly his first role as the jealous ex-husband, finds himself slowly divorcing Dunn, and they spend quite a bit of time undercutting one another's new romantic conquests.

Biased, pithy comments: This was a breakthrough movie for both Dunn and Grant, and taken in that context it is truly excellent; they both burn up the screen in a script that has survived the years mostly intact. However, Grant and Dunn reprise their comedic roles several times in the next few years, and my favorite of these sorts of screwball comedies is ``His Girl Friday.'' Also, the ending of the film is what one might call ``twee''---kinda too-sweet. Still, it's rife in sexy looks, raucous innuendo, and laughs; watch for Bellamy as the hayseed Oklahoman.

Other Notes: Hey! My parents are now from Oklahoma! McCarey won an Oscar for directing this.

How many times I have seen it: x2

Starring: Cary Grant, Irene Dunn, Ralph Bellamy.
Directed by: Leo McCarey
