Bandits(2001)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Two bank robbers are trying to make their money, but end up with a female sidekick they don't want.

Biased, pithy comments: I wonder about this film. If it were a straight-up caper crime comedy, they've got the tone all wrong; the skies are always cloudy, the sideways light illuminating every crease on Willis' face. If it's a moody film about the complications of two men and one woman, then they've muddied it up with all the bank robbing. If it's trying to be some combination wistful/comedy like ``Out of Sight,'' they've completely missed the boat with its lack of versimilitude. I think I enjoyed myself most of the way through, but eventually I began to realize this had more or less the same plot as ``Paint Your Wagon,'' but without the spectacle of Lee Marvin singing. I've seen worse films, but I've seen better ones that are reaching for the kind of zinging dynamic that this doesn't quite hit, and I'm certain that the whole proceeding ran longer than it was supposed to. Shrug, and move on.

Other Notes: In deleted scenes on DVD, we see the effect the Sleepover Bandits have on the families they're sleeping with in greater detail, and I found those scenes funny and well-played, but they're cut so we can have longer poigniant pauses with Willis staring off into the sunset. Yarg.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Cate Blanchett
Directed by: Barry Levinson
