Beyond the Valley of the Dolls(1970)

Wolff rating: EVIL

Plot summary: Three seventies sex kittens make their way to Hollywood.

Biased, pithy comments: It's not clear whether this was supposed to be a parody or not. If it was a parody, I may not be cognizant of the things it's parodying (though it was reminiscent of the ``young women in trouble'' genre of 50s and 60s movies which eventually end in Gut-Shot Broads; see ``Girls Town'' and others for details), and if it wasn't, it was unabashedly awful. Then again, it might well have been unabashedly awful even if it was attempting satire. The late 60s are slowly receding into oblivion, and it's not a bad thing. The drugs, the outfits, the hippie slang, the tough anti-establishment feelings, the weird sexual revolution; all of these things are mixed together to produce a largely hollow whole, even if there are enough jump-cuts to send you into epileptic shock. The rumor behind this movie is that it was produced as the studio was heading into bankruptcy, and no one was paying attention to soft-porn king Meyer's low-budget cult flick written by unknown Illinoisan Roger Ebert, and so a profoundly warped movie made it out into theatres. Is it good? No. Is it so bad you should rent it and cackle? Probably not, though cult fans around the world may disagree.

Other Notes: Note appearance by the Strawberry Alarmclock.
