Birdcage, The(1996)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: The son of a homosexual is marrying the daughter of a conservative Senator, and hijinks erupt trying to make the Senator happy.

Biased, pithy comments: I wouldn't say that this is the best *written* movie (the set-up for the farce is very hard to believe), but parts of the film are done so nicely it's hard not to like it. Scenes where the gay men are trying not to act so darn gay are both funny on the surface and reflect more deeply the conflict that lurks in gay men's hearts. Lane is amazing, and Williams, though not convincingly in love with Lane, shines as an actor (and not as just being his normal crazy self).

Other Notes: Some nicely synced bits done I suspect by computer compositing where a long helicopter shot is spliced in with an on-set camera seamlessly. Some of the other matting was done poorly, at least on the video copy I saw.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Nathan Lane, Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Diane Wiest.
