Black Swan, The(1942)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: First mate of Captain Morgan gets caught up in political intrigue and love while sailing about on the Spanish Main.

Biased, pithy comments: Buckles are securely swashed in this largely brainless sea yarn. Power is actually pretty leaden in the lead role, but O'Hara is a little better. Anthony Quinn is on set for a little while, too, so look lively. I dig pirate movies, and this one has pirates in it, but it really isn't very tense, and outside of one heck of a good swordfighting scene and some sort of uncomfortable rape-fantasy stuff going on with Power and O'Hara, it's pretty standard. Fun, but not necessary.

Other Notes: Cinematography by Shamroy won Oscar, music by Newman was nominated.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Tyrone Power, Maureen O'Hara, Laird Cregar, Edward Ashley
Directed by: Henry King
