Blast from the Past(1999)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: In a totally new career move, Brendan Fraser plays a fish out of water, a man out of time. This time around, he's been concealed in a bomb shelter for 35 years.

Biased, pithy comments: Although the film is ultimately light and twinkly, contrary to my desire to loathe this movie for its somewhat incoherent plot, easy gags, and moments of clunky dialog, I couldn't. I had a great time watching it---laughing at the malpropisms and mal-attitude-isms. Fraser has always held a goofy charm for me, and Silverstone, despite her wretched roles as an actress since Clueless (anyone remember her turn as `Batgirl?'), remains ludicrously babe-ilicious; I could watch a film about her brushing her teeth and still have to be reminded to put my tongue back in my mouth afterwards. They seem to get along well as they churn through the by-the-numbers romance glued on the end of what otherwise is a really quirky movie about very strange people locked underground through their own ignorance. Walken and Spacek actually have the most interesting characters, but by the second half of the film they are mostly (and confusingly) forgotten in lieu of a snappy dance number and the aforementioned romance. I had lots of fun watching this film, but am embarassed to admit it.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Brendan Fraser, Christopher Walken, Alicia Silverstone, Sissy Spacek.
Directed by: Hugh Wilson
