Boogie Nights(1997)

Wolff rating: EXCELLENT

Plot summary: Boy with monster endowment joins the strange world of 70s porn.

Biased, pithy comments: Clever film with resonances throughout; the end carefully reflects the beginning and the characters are well-rounded and depthy. At times a little long (perhaps one too many characters), although one can see where that was intentional---the camera stays on to show these sexual athletes doing...normal, human things like ordering donuts. A classic tale of hubris, drugs, and failure, and all set in the remarkable costumes of the 70s (and ugly early eighties). See it.

Other Notes: Philip Baker Hall and Philip Seymour Hoffman are stars of Anderson's last film, ``Hard Eight,'' which should also be seen.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Don Cheadle, Heather Graham, Luis Guzman, Philip Baker Hall, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg.
Directed by: Paul Thomas Anderson
