Cleopatra Jones(1973)

Wolff rating: NIGHTMARE

Plot summary: Special Agent Cleo takes on the lesbian Mother, a drug dealer who is hasslin' Cleo's favorite charity.

Biased, pithy comments: ``Heavy,'' intones Cleo's boyfriend early on (and then later, and then again, and then again...the guy's lines are 50% one word). This movie is exactly not that. A blaxploitation film that had clearly seen one to many Bond films, ``Jones'' is one of those movies that defies rationality and becomes all about hats. Yes, that's right, hats. This movie had some of the most innovative and flashy headwear I've seen on celluloid, and I quickly gave up trying to track the daffy and dumb plot and started concentrating on counting head costumes. The count reached the 20s, here, with high points being a pink snood, Doodlebug's pre Kid'n'Play hi-top fade, and that weird Ultimate Frisbee thing Dobson wears over her turban. If you are a milliner, this is your film. Otherwise, I'd suggest a blaxploitation film with a plot of some sort and possibly Pam Grier. Watch for a slumming Shelley Winters in a Ronald McDonald fright wig.

Other Notes: Spawned a sequel. No, I'm not related to Ms. Dobson. Costumes by Georgio di Sant Angelo.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Tamara Dobson, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas as ``Doodlebug''
Directed by: Jack Starett
