Dead Ringers(1988)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Creepy twin gynecologists find their normal, creepy existence pulled apart by a creepy woman.

Biased, pithy comments: Did I mention it was creepy? One of Cronenberg's better movies, this manages to convey the isolation of the brothers into something more palpable than the usual aloofness of, say, ``Crash'' or ``eXisTenZ''. I really worried about these train-wreck characters as they staggered from needy emotional relationship to need emotional relationship. Bujold is pretty cold, but Irons nails the nuanced difference between the two twins. It misses the mark for me, though, for largely personal reasons; I have trouble understanding movies that focus on heavy drug use as a plot device. Basically, drugs are pretty boring for me, and watching people use drugs makes me think not ``Boy, they're so messed up they need drugs to survive,'' but rather, ``Boy, if they were sober they might be able to think their way out of this situation.'' Hard to look away from, but unpleasant.

Other Notes: Based on novel which, in turn, was based on real life. Best part was seeing a young Jill Hennessey (Assistant District Attorney Claire Kincaid from ``Law and Order'') with her real-life twin sister in about 15 seconds of screen time as escorts. Wow; I didn't recognize her until the credits, at which point I went back and looked and, dang, there she is! Her first movie/TV role until Kincaid.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Jeremy Irons, Genevive Bujold
