Deep Blue Sea(1999)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Superintelligent sharks menace a group of scientists and support staff.

Biased, pithy comments: This kind of movie is sort of the definition of the word dervivative. I like a good B movie, and I like well-made derivative stuff, assuming you're assembling old ideas in new ways. However, except for a few inspired casting choices (Jackson and Mr. Cool J), there isn't a lot going on outside of some nice surround-sound explosions. I knew they were bereft of ideas when they were forced to do the giant-wash-of-seawater-into-living-space thing half an hour in, and then were sort of out of anywhere else to go. The plot is riddled with holes, the premise implausible to the extreme, and the final moments are anticlimactic. Having said all that, of course, it's a good movie to MST3K and certainly qualifies as diverting.

Other Notes: License plate in teeth is the same as the one in Jaws.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, Samuel L. Jackson, LL Cool J.
Directed by: Renny Harlin
