Desert Bloom(1986)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Young girl comes of age in 1950s Nevada.

Biased, pithy comments: I call this sort of movie a ``Mom movie,'' since it's the kind my mother likes---a memoir about discovering life that isn't particularly weepy, but contains solid acting and an interesting, if not particularly meaningful, series of scenes. At times, this movie worked, most particularly the scenes where Barkin and Gish talk about life; Voight also has several good moments. As a whole, though, the movie doesn't quite feel complete---not as if something was edited out, but as if the artists constructing the movie didn't quite grasp what they were reaching for. Still, an elegant and realistic movie---the sets and feel are excellent.

Other Notes: From a man who directed ``Miami Vice.'' Weird.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Annabeth Gish, Jon Voight, JoBeth Williams, Ellen Barkin.
Directed by: Eugene Corr
