Enforcer, The(1995)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: An undercover cop finds himself and his son deeply embroiled in a murderous gang.

Biased, pithy comments: So, given that this is a Hong Kong action vehicle, this has got some good moments, from your basic small axe fu to chair fu, trash fu, truck fu, sheet fu, and even kid fu. Li has charm as the misunderstood cop, while Mui can mostly keep up with him with not-quite-enough fight scenes. Ku is at times a show stealer as the kid. The disappointments might only be that the plot gets more and more nonsensical as it continues (not that it wasn't already goofy---come on, undercover cops can tell their wives, if no one else), Yu overplays his scenery-chewing baddie (though he's quite athletic), and perhaps one or two of the emotional scenes are forced against the high-kick action. Still, for one of these sorts of films, it's great fun, it has heart, and Li exudes superstardom by the end in his smashing blue suit.

Other Notes: Mammalian diving reflex! Cool!

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Jet Li, Anita Mui, Tse Miu, Rongguang Yu
