Wolff rating: NOT BAD
Plot summary: Black sheep son returns home from prison for his brother's wedding, but falls for the bride---oh, and everyone is a criminal in this movie.
Biased, pithy comments: I didn't really want to see this movie; it seemed like it was going to be about stupid people with stupid problems. Indeed, for much of the film I was thinking, ``Damn, how stupid can you be?'' as our band of uneducated low-lifes stagger from one crisis to another. As the film unfolded, it started going in directions I truly didn't expect, and by the end was so entirely twisted that it seems the writers' intent was to do nothing else but surprise us. But, ultimately, I didn't buy it---there were lots of loose ends and some really implausible moments. The film drifts off into the sunset at the end, but I kept waiting for the giant trial that would never be able to sort out this mess. So, if you want to be surprised, this is your film, but if you're looking for interesting characters (as opposed to yet-another-70s-bunch-of-scumbags-as-found-in-Pulp-Fiction, only Tarantino did it better), I'd suggest more intelligent films.
Other Notes: So why is it that people who sport a three day's growth of beard have the same scruffy half-beard each day, and then even the same look months later? Doesn't anyone shave? Oh, well, it worked for Don Johnson. The trailers for this film play it like a romantic comedy, which this clearly isn't. It's more film noir, and it's not even that, eventually.
How many times I have seen it: x1
