Wolff Movie Index

Four Rooms(1995)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: 4 separate sub-movies that share the same setting (a run-down hotel) and one character (the bellboy); each movie is made by another director.

Biased, pithy comments: As with other tries at cadging together short films to make a complete subject (frequently because theaters don't know how to market short films---it's 90 minutes or nothing), some of the segments work and others don't. The ones that don't work are genuinely lousy film. The first segment (directed by Anders) is more or less soft-core porn---an aimless, sexualized plot with numerous bare breasts (though, I admit, I'll never turn down a shirtless Ione Skye) that never really comes to fruition. The second, Rockwell's, is more incoherent and has only slightly better form. The last, Tarantino's, is talky and somewhat amusing, but tragically stars Tarantino. Rodriguez can take just about anyone, including two clever children, and make them movie stars with action, silliness, and hilarity. However, this film made me learn to hate Tim Roth; except in the Rodriguez segment, he's an annoying, blithering idiot that serves only to annoy.

Other Notes: Perhaps best to just fast-forward to "The Misbehavers", but your mileage may vary.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Tim Roth (and a horde of others, including Madonna, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas).
Directed by: Allison Anders, Alexadre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino
