Game, The(1997)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: Investment banker gets a strange birthday present that takes him on a scary, wild chase.

Biased, pithy comments: In these movies where the trick is to figure out whether or not it's live or it's Memorex, I often end feeling used, no matter what the ending. This movie was no exception, and it always annoys me that no matter how hard you try to figure it out, you're ultimately at the mercy of the director. Still, I was weirded out and thrilled, and Fincher has a wonderful eye for making the normal seem eerie, unreal, and unnerving. This is no match for ``Seven,'' but I was interested and involved the whole time. Douglas can always make you root for him despite the fact that his characters are rarely average, normal, or good in any conventional sense. Creepy fun.

Other Notes: Nice continuing shirt gag.

How many times I have seen it: 128min

Starring: Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Unger, James Rebhorn
