Ginger Snaps(2000)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: A sister starts turning a little lycanthropic as get gets ``the curse''.

Biased, pithy comments: I think this is a repeat of what someone else said, but at every turn this movie tries to break out of the bounds of its genre (the werewolf movie), but finds itself, much like its heroines, trapped by social convention. Even so, it's a familiar idea done in a striking fashion with strong characters (self-centered teens done with just the right kind of ironic twist), a distinctly non-exploitative woman-centered tone, and good visual style. The production is sort of drenched in blood, so it's not for the faint of heart, but I was continually amused by something that should have been a sleepy retread. Enjoy with popcorn.

Other Notes: Canadian, and daring only in a post-Columbine world, but I didn't realize it at the time. Mimi Rogers is quietly hilarious.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Emily Perkins, Katharine Isabelle, Mimi Rogers.
Directed by: John Fawcett
