Wolff rating: NOT BAD
Plot summary: Young aspiring actress turns to phone sex to start paying the bills.
Biased, pithy comments: Although Girl 6 follows an interesting character path, the ``daring expose'' of phone sex teaches (at least me) nothing new about the industry and gets in the way of the narrative, which could have been far more evil and claustrophobic---the film certainly was claustrophobic and evil, but it didn't find that edge until late. I generally like Spike Lee (I like anybody who gets their camera off the tripod and really lets it move), and I very much enjoy Theresa Randle, and this film contains all of Lee's excellent camerawork and prominent filmmaking---he's stretching the boundaries of film narrative in a good way. In fact, Lee strikes me as a man on the way to being the next Fellini. Unfortunately, he makes some of the same decisions that bug me about Fellini---aloof and aimless characters, overly indulgent self-referential material (including lifting dialog from his previous films), and an overall feeling of vague, barely-controlled chaos. Thus, I can only recommend this film to people who already like Lee (or Felini).
