Wolff rating: EXCELLENT
Plot summary: Southern belle finds her world turned upside down with the coming of the Civil War.
Biased, pithy comments: It's a dated piece, to be sure---the acting is 30s-movie-overdone, the sets are an odd combination of cardboard and extravagance, and the attitudes about the South and black folk. . .yeah, anyway, it's dated. But at nearly four hours, the time flies by as this classic tale of love and hate, South and North, immovable object and irresistable force, and even life and death unfolds on screen. Gable, Leigh, and the long-suffering de Havilland just own their parts, while McDaniel and Howard hold up their end of the script. Like most ``greatest movie ever told'' films (like ``Titanic'' ``Ben Hur,'' and ``Casablanca'') this is a middle-brow epic where characters helpfully state their intentions and inner feelings so that even if you don't get it, it's spelled out for you. A great film, a great experience, and certainly worth your while. This one is a classic, and you can tell why.
Other Notes: Han Solo and Rhett Butler are two scoundrels in kind; I couldn't tell them apart after a while.
