Home Fries(1998)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Local unwed mother finds herself at the center of a whirlwind of activity around her ex-lover, his wife, and his step-sons.

Biased, pithy comments: It's not quite sitcom; it's too big-budget, but at the same time it's a bit too weird to be a romantic comedy, and it's far too goofy to be a drama. So, that must mean it's quirky. Like ``Guarding Tess,'' the script and staging end up centering around some action which seems manufactured rather than genuine, and the noise from that action drowns out the really great work by Wilson, Busey, and Daryl Mitchell (in a quick black-guy-at-work role). There aren't two bits of sense in any of the characters, but they seem to have their hearts in nearly the right place. Perhaps two more drops of versimilitude and one drop less of action and the pacing would have been *just* right. As it is, it's a little bumpy. Your mileage will vary.

Other Notes: Wilson nails the military accent perfectly.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Drew Barrymore, Catherine O'Hara, Luke Wilson, Jake Busey.
Directed by: Dean Parisot
