King and I, The(1956)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: English schoolteacher comes to Siam to teach the King's children, and a culture class ensues.

Biased, pithy comments: This is a musical with unfortunately not-very-memorable music, but the plot is very strong, the images rich, and the production luxurious. Brynner makes the movie, and Kerr is also excellent. Especially of note is the version of ``Uncle Tom's Cabin'' done by a local writer. There are some slow points and some silly points, and the lack of casting actual Thai people as the Siamese can be grating in the enlightenment of today, but still a fine movie for a musical.

Other Notes: Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner
