Kingpin(1996)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Washed-up bowling champion takes an Amish bowler to the championship in Reno.

Biased, pithy comments: Advertised as being from the ``idiots who brought you `Dumb and Dumber','', you can imagine that this film isn't rich in highbrow farce. It keeps lurching from being a Zuckeresque ``Airplane'' type film to something more meaningful between Angel and Harrelson, to a Ramis-like story of a loveable loser who can't quite keep it together. There are clearly some jokes that are knee-slapping and some really funny vamping on screen (most especially Murray being Murray at his most obnoxious; his hair is fantastic, too), and I have to admit I had no idea how the film would play itself out---the story keeps twisting around. At the same time, the uneven tone (and some of the more base humor---I just don't need to see Quaid using a urinal as a normal toilet) left me cold at times. I won't stop you from seeing it, but I won't tell you to rent it, either.

Other Notes: Yep, Angel was in ``Spies Like Us'' as one of the babes in the Russian rocket crew.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Woody Harrelson, Vanessa Angel, Randy Quaid, Bill Murray.
Directed by: Peter and Bobby Farrelly
