Mafia!(1998)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Sort of a knock-off of every mafia movie you've ever seen, from ``The Godfather'' to ``Scarface.''

Biased, pithy comments: Movies with Abrahams somewhere in the list of credits are usually more-or-less plotless parody fests chock full of easy jokes and quick lines. This tries to be the same, but without much effect---unlike ``Airplane!'' or ``Hot Shots!!'' one immediately notices the pauses between jokes, without the layered anything-for-a-gag signs in the background, goofy transitions, and laugh-out-loud lines. What jokes are there miss more than hit, with the possible exception of an unintentional Macarena and the revelation that Diane has a child. I just can't recommend it even as an afficianado of these sorts of films, and that's low praise. Although Applegate is well above the level of the material and Olympia Dukakis seems to take her flatulence humor in stride, it's painful to watch Bridges' arthritic walk and fumbled lines---indeed, this was his last film.

Other Notes: OK, one more joke not in the trailer that works---``Newspaper seen in air over cathedral!''

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Jay Mohr, Billy Burke, Christina Applegate, Pamela Gidley, Olympia Dukakis, Lloyd Bridges.
Directed by: Jim Abrahams
