Wolff Movie Index

Memento(2000)

Wolff rating: EXCELLENT

Plot summary: Man with anterior retrograde amnesia has to keep reminding himself of his quest.

Biased, pithy comments: Once and a while, a movie comes along with such a unique voice that it just shakes up your expectations. No matter how familiar plot elements are, the mere fact of its storytelling conceit makes it fun to watch. In this case, the manner of the storytelling is a funny kind of disconnected backwards (perfect for the real-life medical problem the main character suffers from, although there's not a case on record of someone like that being as high-functioning as this) that makes it fascinating. On a thematic level, it makes you conscious of what you choose to remember and why, although this is subsumed by the whodunit aspects. Definitely recommended, and know as little about it as possible before going in. Carrie-Anne Moss is just gorgeous.

Other Notes: DVD contains notes that flesh out backstory; not sure if I wanted to know, exactly, although it cleared up some confusion on my part.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior
Directed by: Christopher Nolan
