Men With Guns(1997)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: Rich doctor goes on pilgrimage to find his students who have gone to work with the Indians.

Biased, pithy comments: Set in a nameless Central American country, this is a film laced with metaphor. Sayles (who has frequently been called ``novelistic'' in his approach to film) has carefully created interesting, rich characters and mixed them on screen. He takes each character and shakes them, usually slowly and gently, until suddenly you're looking in them rather than at them. Absolutely beautiful. At the same time, this movie doesn't quite pack the same wallop as ``Lone Star,'' Sayles's previous film, and those looking for the same puzzle-box won't find the same thing. Instead, this movie is like one long road trip leading upwards, perhaps towards salvation, perhaps to just where rumors of heaven go to rest. A slow, careful movie worth watching.
