Wolff Movie Index

Michael(1996)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Tabloid reports go looking for an angel, and are surprised when they find one.

Biased, pithy comments: Let me start by saying, this story is lousy. Part of the lousiness of the story comes from Nora Ephron's flaky story that just doesn't hang together. Part of the lousiness comes from the poor characterization of everyone except Michael. And part of the lousiness comes from filming a movie about Iowa in Texas. (Oh, wait, I'm just being bitter.) But, aside from the lousy story and flat supporting cast, this movie was very funny, very warm, and quite endearing. And it's all because of John Travolta. So, in the mood to see Travolta being his weirdly-compelling best? Willing to swallow large volumes of syrup when he's not on screen? And are you willing to shake your head sadly when Pastorelli is misued? This is your movie.

Other Notes: Yes, most of it really was filmed in Texas. Sigh.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: John Travolta, William Hurt, Robert Pastorelli, Andie MacDowell
Directed by: Nora Ephron
