Wolff rating: NOT BAD
Plot summary: Car engineer is laid off, and his wife goes out to find a job.
Biased, pithy comments: Pauline Kael once said that TV redoes what works in movies endlessly. This movie feels like a late-90s sitcom, like ``Everyone Loves Raymond,'' only it was made in 1983. It has pieces of typical John Hughes writing---the preternaturally smart kids, the perfect life in the suburbs, and a wide array of goofy supporting cast. It has become a snapshot of a widening revolution in gender stereotypes, one that hasn't plateaued yet. Keaton is slowly emasculated by not working, and ends up simply becoming a woman, all the way down to going to the male strip club, truly an icon of the end of the suburban sexual revolution of the 70s. It's fun, it's light, it's fluffy, but it isn't very daring at this point.
Other Notes: Hmm. Even Maltin thinks this was a bit of a rehash of previous ideas. So maybe it wasn't even daring then. I can't remember. DVD I saw was mediocre print with wobbly sound. Is it me, or is Teri Garr really cute?
How many times I have seen it: x1
