Mr. Nice Guy(1997)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: There's a plot? Oh, well, OK, something about gang members at war, with poor Jackie, a TV cook, getting caught up in it all.

Biased, pithy comments: If you're interested in a plot that even makes sense, much less is believeable, you've come to the wrong place. Much like ``Rumble in the Bronx'' and unlike ``Crime Story,'' this film is pretty much some neat stunts and chop-socky glued together with laughable connecting material. Except for seeing Fitzpatrick playing something besides a secretary from ``NYPD Blue,'' the acting is pretty weak and the characterizations cartoony. But the action sequences are acts of beauty---a few inspired gotcha moments (such as swapping loaded and unloaded guns, climbing through a fence instead of over it, jumping on a teetertotter painter's scaffhold, and even combat with power tools) with some pure grace during the inevitable fight scenes. Perhaps the finest moment is the chase through the corridors of blue doors. See it, but not for the plot. If you liked other Jackie Chan movies, you'll like this one.

Other Notes: Monster truck also appears in ``Starship.'' I could watch an entire movie about tough gangster chick who gets tragically few minutes of screen time. Cyclist is the director.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Jackie Chan, Richard Norton, Miki Lee, Karen McLymont, Gabrielle Fitzpatrick.
Directed by: Sammo Hung Kam-Bo
