Mulan(1998)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: A young woman joins the army to fight against the Huns.

Biased, pithy comments: This was a cute, simple movie. It wasn't as spanning or glorious as some of the other Disney epics that have come out recently, but I see that as a sign of maturity. The two sidekick characters, the grasshopper and Murphy's Moo Shu were great. Disney handled the rape and pillaging of Huns pretty smoothly without showing a whit of gore (or even combat, most of the time). I guess my only real complaint is that the Mongols in real life were pretty damn scary, but these guys seemed pretty weak threats and without a lot of motivation.

Other Notes: Watch the credits and note that the singing voices were different; Jasmine's voice (Lea Salonga) is back as Mulan, and Donny Osmond (!) sings for Wong.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, B.D. Wong.
Directed by: Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook
