My Best Friend's Wedding(1997)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Food critic discovers that she's in love with her best friend, but it's four days before his wedding! Oh no!

Biased, pithy comments: This is a movie all about love, friendship, and cruelty. Roberts is underhanded, evil, conniving, and mean, but she really means well---for her. Good performance by her, hilarious by her gay sidekick, and kinda dull from the male lead. Diaz is OK, but looks old for a junior in college. The whole production is cute, and a good date movie if you and your date want to argue with one another about whether or not Roberts was justified; also, you should be aware that there will be some serious Motownage, which is good news as far as I'm concerned.

Other Notes: Critics liked this one better than I did, so your milage may vary. I think I like romantic comedies either sappier or edgier than this.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Julia Robert, Dermot Mulroney, Carmen Diaz, Rupert Everett.
