Out of Africa(1985)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: Autobiographical story of a Danish noblewoman who goes to Kenya to start a farm.

Biased, pithy comments: Sweeping, sensual look at the Kenyan landscape works at several levels, though probably the least at the level of forward momentum in the plot; think lots of helicopter flyovers of green hills, flocks of birds, and rivers in lieu of action. However, the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century British occupation of Kenya is wonderful, all of the actors are excellent (with a tip of the hat to Brandauer, who plays the playboy perfectly), and John Barry's soundtrack soars. Doesn't quite mean anything, but certainly absorbing for its 2.5 hours.

Other Notes: Made me want to return to Kenya. Won best picture in 1985, along with best original score, art direction, cinematography, etc.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Joesph Thiaka.
Directed by: Sydney Pollack
