Overseas(1990)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Three women in Algeria in the 50s and early 60s struggle with their men and their lives.

Biased, pithy comments: Although generally critically acclaimed, I found myself distanced from this film somehow. The clever use of time shows the strength film has to nuance each scene depending on which character's perspective we're seeing it from, but I found myself only partially enthralled---colonial life seems an alien world to an American, and the scenes of privelleged wealthy we watch deliberately ignoring an expanding Muslim revolution thematically overwhelm the tales of cracked loves each cousin tries to find.

Other Notes: Nominated for a Caesar.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Nicole Garcia, Marianne Basler, Brigitte Rouan
Directed by: Brigitte Rouan
