Pallbearer, The(1996)

Wolff rating: MOSTLY HARMLESS

Plot summary: Directionless gen-xer is a pallbearer at a high school friend's funeral whom he doesn't remember.

Biased, pithy comments: Yawn, squirm. That's about all I did during this film, outside of a few snorts. Where ``The Graduate'' (which this film is clearly an homage to) explores the inner reaches of a newly-disenfranchised graduate's soul, this movie calculatedly plays on our Gen-X sympathies---man, I wish I could afford to move out of my mom's house, too. (Oh, wait, I did. And I got married without sleeping with any of my friend's mothers, too.) If this were truly a zany comedy (with Schwimmer's ``Friends'' stardom, one might expect that), it would have been too slow, but as a thought about human experience it is ultimately hollow and dreary. Skip it and see something with more heart.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: David Schwimmer, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael Rapaport, Barbara Hershey.
Directed by: Matt Reeves
