Wolff Movie Index

Payback(1999)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: Back-from-the-dead robber goes after the mob to get back some money he feels is rightfully his.

Biased, pithy comments: Although this film is pretty silly, unrealistic, and set in the 70s just so people could wear goofy fashions and drive giant cars, the writing, pacing, and acting has enough verve to carry the whole production through in style. Gibson and Bello have some chemistry, while an uncredited James Coburn cruises through dialog as the only sane gangster in the lot. You have to like any movie that knocks off several main characters of the course of an hour, though I was hoping they'd have the guts to do in the dog, too. Some rather graphic violence, hearkening back to the gory days of Dick Tracy comic strips.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Mel Gibson, Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, Deborah Unger, David Payner, and Lucy Liu (in fetish garb).
Directed by: Brian Helgeland (and others)
