Philadelphia Story, The(1940)

Wolff rating: EXCELLENT

Plot summary: High society marriage ignites passion on the part of an ex-husband of the bride, two reporters, and a mischevious sister.

Biased, pithy comments: There have been enough parodies of Hepburn's distinctive speaking style that one forgets that she's a drop-dead awesome actress. Likewise, Stewart shows an ornery streak like he lacks in later Everyman roles, and Gable swans in reprising his role in ``His Girl Friday.'' Oh, but it's good---every line a comeback, every bitter statement a well-aimed dagger. The theme, Ms. Lord's inaccessibility, sometimes seems told rather than shown, but it's a corker of a film. Check it out.

Other Notes: Remade as a musical 14 years later as ``High Society.''

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Ruth Hussey.
Directed by: George Cukor
