Preacher's Wife, The(1996)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Angel comes down to help out a struggling pastor and his wife.

Biased, pithy comments: Although a pleasant enough fairy tale and both Houston and Washington are affiable and charismatic, there is neither the spark of true love nor a narrative focus---I could never seem to tell if it was a story about angels, kids in trouble, pastors, rich people moving out of their old neighborhoods and forgetting their pasts, or two kids separated by bad luck. It just wanders from place to place---pleasantly, and with good music, but just doesn't ``gel''. Too bad; I think there was plenty of talent available.

Other Notes: Continuity error I noticed---you can still see baskets in the back of the car even after they're finished with delivering.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, Courtney B. Vance, Gregory Hines.
Directed by: Penny Marshall
