Wolff rating: GOOD
Plot summary: Superhero schoolgirl battles spoiled supergenius schoolgirl. And there are some aliens, too.
Biased, pithy comments: This movie was...odd. Very, very odd. I saw this movie right after I had seen my first real anime movie (well, second, but the first one was 10 years earlier). This was not ``Ghost in the Shell,'' and I didn't know what to make of it. Thus, I historically gave it a poor rating, maundering on about schoolgirl fetishes and whatnot. I can say now that I've been through probably a good hundred hours of anime that this, indeed, is good anime as opposed to bad anime. It's weird, and definitely full of Japanese cultural references, but this is pretty nutty stuff even for a wacky superpower high school story. Surprisingly, for such a spoofy thing, it's quite well animated. I single-framed through some of the big action sequences and there are a few of funny single-frame bits in there that zoom by subliminally. Now, if you're a newbie at anime (like I was), you're going to find this baffling since you won't recognize what it's parodying, and if you're watching it on TV they will likely cut the lesbian overtones and some of the supporting plot moments (they occur during the courtesy breast bits). It's juvenile, but amusing.
Other Notes: Animated. And, yeah, it was Japan and it was the 80s, so a movie with non-stop jailbait panties was OK.
How many times I have seen it: x2
