Road to Hong Kong, The(1962)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: The crooner and the clown are caught up in another fluffy buddy movie, this one influenced heavily by the James Bond franchise.

Biased, pithy comments: The Cold War made spies exciting, and Crosby and Hope are in the middle of a nutty spy show. These movies are more like episodes of ``Saturday Night Live'' connected by a few actors who try to push the plot forward. Taken as such, they're fine, diverting entertainment, but the jokes and the running-about are a little too loose if you aren't steeped in the tradition. This is one of the very last ones, and the formula of talking to the camera, making fun of the plot, and visiting Dorothy Lamour are so well-treaded that it's impossible to take this movie seriously. I had fun watching it, but could hardly recommend it against its peers. Your mileage may vary, probably in proportion to your age at the time when it came out.

Other Notes: OK, so the bit with the monkey-machines was pretty darn funny, although it came straight from ``Modern Times.'' Bing Crosby waddling in the space suit was pretty funny, too.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, a young Joan Collins, Dorothy Lamour.
Directed by: Norman Panama
