Saving Grace(2000)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Upper crust British woman on the rocks financially after her husband's suicide has to find alternate income, and gets some help from her vagabond gardner.

Biased, pithy comments: So, it's a British class comedy with stoner overtones. Or something. This is one of those movies that if you find beautiful shots of British fishing villages charming, you like British character actors, and you're not picky about your movie making sense or having a plot, as such, this is your film. Otherwise, you'll probably be left a little cold by the hamhanded ``comedy'' and totally unbelievable ending. The performances are great, but the story is partially stunningly predictable and partially suffers from the ``how dumb do you think the audience is?'' problem, where we have to believe that this bright woman wouldn't notice the light against the sky, or take the precaution of, oh, throwing a tarp over the whole matter now and again. No, it just doesn't work, but I bet it'd be funny if you were stoned.

Other Notes: My lovely wife had no problem with the morality of breaking the controlled substances laws, but I figured Grace might be going over the line by making so much weed. But I'm not a baby boomer with a reefer history, though.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Brenda Blethyn, Craig Freguson, Martin Clunes, Jamie Foreman.
