Wolff Movie Index

Shrek(2001)

Wolff rating: EXCELLENT

Plot summary: An unlikeable ogre and a really unlikeable donkey try to complete quests such that the ogre can be left alone.

Biased, pithy comments: Beautifully animated. As Pacific Data Images' first foray into feature-film production, it's an unmitigated hit. The voice talents are great, the fairy-tale humor works for both parents and children (and even the childless), and the topsy-turvy anti-fairytale world in which they live works. My complaint centers only around how un-timeless this movie is. It's hip, it's happenin', it's got some starting-to-be-stale references to currently popular movies, and it's awash in flatulence jokes. Knock off the kiddie toilet humor and reduce the quip count and this movie won't look old in 10 years, but as it is, it'll stop making sense soon.

Other Notes: Eddie Murphy is the real star of this show, hands down.

How many times I have seen it: x2

Starring: Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow, Vincent Cassel.
Directed by: Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson
