Sliding Doors(1998)

Wolff rating: GOOD

Plot summary: We see two versions of a London woman's life, one where she successfully catches a train and one where she doesn't.

Biased, pithy comments: This is a movie whose conceit is so precious it runs the danger of having that conceit destroy the storytelling---e.g., it's too cute and too pat that it'll overwhelm anything else the director was trying to say. And, indeed, without the dual versions, it might have been a pleasant but forgettable romance set in England, a la ``Notting Hill.'' Instead, though, it successfully, if lightly, ponders fate and chance (and sides mostly with fate) and the nature of loving people who might hurt us. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but keeps your attention and goes unexpected directions now and again. A pleasant afternoon could be spent watching this with your sweetie.

Other Notes: One could complain that one of the big plot twists happens mostly through information-hiding; namely, the audience is led to believe one thing and a simple line of dialog would clear up the confusion, but I'll forgive them in the name of artistic license. Question here---why would you ever cheat on Gwyneth Paltrow? Sheesh.
