Smilla's Sense of Snow(1997)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Female mathematician gets involved in investigating the death of a neighbor.

Biased, pithy comments: Beautiful, beautiful movie. No, really---fantastic-looking. Julia Ormond is elegant but she is outdone by the dark snowscapes and ice around her. Unfortunately, I had trouble keeping track of the motivations of many of the characters, and the ending was disappointing---I couldn't discern the point of several of the scenes. Still, moody thrillers focused on character shouldn't be discouraged, and naturally movies about beautiful female mathematicians are worth savoring, but with the sort of murky plot, I'm not sure I'm able to give it an unadulterated recommendation.

Other Notes: Novel is supposed to be better, but also has a disappointing ending.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Julia Ormond, Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave.
Directed by: Bille August
