Wolff rating: EXCELLENT
Plot summary: Invalid woman overhears a phone conversation between two men setting up a murder, and following that trail leads her into a web of deceit and treachery.
Biased, pithy comments: A fairly fast-moving film that isn't quite as rich in twists and turns as, say, ``Bound,'' but still made for an excellent watch. I appreciated it more the second time through after having experienced other films from the 40s and see how this movie turns some of the more standard conventions around. Lancaster is brooding, Stanwyck (who is babe-ilicious in some of the shots) can switch moods as fast as necessary for the shallow woman she plays, and the rest of their castmates do their part.
Other Notes: Black and white.
How many times I have seen it: x2
Starring: Burt Lancaster, Barbara Stanwyck, Ann Richards
