Spaceballs(1987)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Sendoff of Star Wars movies, a space jockey rescues a princess.

Biased, pithy comments: Though there are some really hilarious moments in this show (including some blatantly funny bumper stickers on spaceships), on the whole it's an uneven exercise in not-quite-funny-enough satire. There are some obvious jokes, some needless bathroom humor, and a generally rough cut. It's odd; Brooks actually writes some very fun romance into his shows---Zuniga and Pullman have some real chemistry (as do Marian and Robin in ``Men In Tights'')---but when the emphasis is supposed to be on knee-slapping humor, it gets lost in the shuffle. Brooks needs a collaborator who can edit his scripts into something much funnier than shows like this one. Skip it unless it's on cable and you're cooking dinner at the time.

Other Notes: William Hurt plays, well, William Hurt getting something launched out of his chest. Again.

How many times I have seen it: x3

Starring: Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, Mel Brooks.
Directed by: Mel Brooks
