Spriggan(1998)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: Secret society battles other secret society over Noah's Ark.

Biased, pithy comments: There are about two moments of genuine emotion in this movie. Once, when Yu realizes he's been had while driving along in Turkey, he shrugs his shoulders and smacks his forehead. The other time is when Yu comes sprinting out of an explosion dragging a huge gun with him, transformed by rage. Outside from those two very human surprises, this is an anime movie devoid of anything but the most rote and cliche feelings. The first 25 minutes or so are fairly action-packed and riff off of ``Raiders of the Lost Ark'' (and, strangely, Disney's ``Atlantis'' which in turn riffed off of a Japanese which riffed off of an earlier Disney live-action movie, but I digress). Alas, the second half just spirals off into the typical baffling Japanese science fiction mysticism that is both preachy and boring. It sports glorious animation, but the stiffest characters. Save your pennies and rent the entire series of ``Neon Genesis Evangelion.''

Other Notes: Dude, do Yu and Jean have some sort of...thing going?

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Many animated people
Directed by: Hirotsugu Kawasaki
