Star Trek, Insurrection(1998)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Data goes nuts while observing a small colony of idyllic people. Picard and co. come to investigate.

Biased, pithy comments: No one really asked for this sequel. First off, we still hadn't quite come down from that high of seeing ``First Contact,'' and we're also all sitting here holding our breath for the next ``Star Wars'' film. There had been little hype for this film---I had managed not see a single trailer for it until it stumbled into theaters just before Christmas. Beyond that, there isn't very much new to say about these characters---they were left having understood their purpose in life. But, the franchise must go on, and, tragically, this was an odd-numbered Star Trek film. That said, it wasn't the worst---Trek V continues to take that award and continues to leave all the others in the dust. Instead, this film seems like a longish episode from late season 1 of Next Generation; a perfect, idyllic colony threatened by Starfleet's own bullheadedness and some evil aliens. It's certainly fun and has solid (if unremarkable) special effects, but this isn't a great film, and probably only worth watching if you like Star Trek. If you're getting started in Star Trek, definitely check out ``Wrath of Khan'' as your first film.

Other Notes: One might ask oneself if moving idyllic people off land that would make people immortal, wouldn't you think the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, F. Murray Abraham, Donna Murphy.
