That Thing You Do(1996)

Wolff rating: NOT BAD

Plot summary: Garage band comes together around a hit song in the 60s, but is pulled different directions by fame and fortune.

Biased, pithy comments: This is a story on a quest for a reason to be told. The characters are all quite familiar, the sounds pleasantly retro but largely forgettable, and the story of little-town yokels going to the big leagues is to American culture as Oedipus was to Greek culture---in other words, so fundamental to our society that to even tell it means you have to bring something really amazingly new to it. Hanks, in his writing and directorial debut, hasn't done anything new, but it was still a cute movie. Catch it on TV and fast-forward through the commercials, and try to ignore the fact that it has no real focus.

Other Notes: Note crazy credit---Play-Tone is listed as the distributor of the sound track. Base player has no name throughout entire movie.

How many times I have seen it: x1

Starring: Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, Johnathon Schaech, Steve Zahn, Tom Hanks, Ethan Randall.
Directed by: Tom Hanks
