There's Something About Mary(1998)

Wolff rating: FAIR

Plot summary: A young man, humiliated on prom night with the girl of his dreams, searches for his lost love amid copious dick jokes.

Biased, pithy comments: Very nearly worked. There are some top-drawer talents here (probably led by Markie Post, but your mileage may vary) and a few incredibly funny scenes here and there, but this mix of Farelly crotch-grabbing humor and something more heartfelt peeking out between doesn't hang together. The parts that were there to develop the characters were awkward and unpleasant to watch, while the directors couldn't quite get hold of what was funny in their funniest of scenes. Crotch humor, odd to say, should be heard, not seen; when poor Stiller's little buddy was caught in his zipper, it was funnier to see Post and Keith David averting their eyes in horror than to actually show some unrealistic prothesis. Likewise, I want to see Ben Stiller masturbating like I want someone to remove my left arm with a machete. However, it is a movie for nearly everyone---a romantic comedy, dick jokes, and even a moment of cop interrogation for those who like police procedurals. People seemed to like this one, if the box office totals are to be believed; I cringed more than I laughed. Go with caution and without a date.

Other Notes: Another reviewer said that this movie was immune to criticism---it's either funny or it's beneath contempt. I'd be inbetween; it's funny at times but far from perfect. I'd probably recommend ``Kingpin'' as the more successful of the Farrelly Brother's movies, but strangely everyone has a different favorite. Rather than be enchanted by Mary, I wanted to feed her and buy her clothes that were the right size. I must be getting old.

How many times I have seen it: x1
